Separate Object Per Material

The Separate Object Per Material tool allows to separate object and extract faces based on their assigned materials. It can separate mutiple objects simultaneously. The tool also comes with a function to fix objects with multiple materials, for example, an object that turns green when duplicated.

Material-based extraction

The Separate Object Per Material can extract all the faces shared by the same material for all of your assigned materials on an object.

Tool location #

The tool can be found in the GENtools menu under Mesh → Separate Object Per Material.

How to use #

  • Select at least one object with multiple materials assigned.
  • Set the desired settings in the Separate Object Per Material options window.
  • Run the Separate Object Per Material function and the object parts will be splitted inside a new group.

Assigning a hotkey #

You can assign a hotkey to the Separate Object Per Material tool inside the Maya hotkey editor.

The hotkey entry can be found in the Custom Scripts tab under GENtools → Mesh → Separate Object Per Material.

Tool settings #

  • Fix Materials: Automatically attempt to fix objects with broken material sets before extracting faces.
  • Lock Normals: Locks the perimeter vertex normals before extracting faces so normals on soft edges are kept intact.

Fix object materials #

This function can be used to fix objects with broken material sets. It’s something that can generally occurs on object with which you manually assigned different materials on the object faces.

  • For example, if your object turns green when duplicated, you can use this function before the duplicate operation to fix the object materials.
