Create Primitive Live extends the Maya interactive polygon creation by allowing the user to create their primitives on the surface of any exisiting polygon shape in their scene.

  • The creation of both polygon primitives and NURBS primitives are supported but you can only create the primitives on top of polygons surfaces.

Using Create Primitive Live #

  • First, you need to enable Create Primitive Live. You can manually run the Placement Tool once per session or you can set it to load automatically on Maya startup.
  • Next, you need to activate the Interactive Creation checkbox in the Polygon Primitives menu found under Create → Polygon Primitives → Interactive Creation.
  • From now on, when you are going to create a new Polygon Primitive (or NURBS Primitive), you can target your mouse on any polygon object in your scene to create it directly on it surface.
  • You can hold down the Shift key to grow the primitive from it’s base and constraint the shape to three-dimensional equilateral proportions.
  • You can hold down Ctrl + Shift to grow the primitive from it’s center and constraint the shape to three-dimensional equilateral proportions.
  • Make sure Enable Create Primitive Live checkbox is activated in the Create Primitive Live Options.
  • If Exit On Completion is unchecked, the last construction plane will be kept until you exit the tool.

Interactive Creation #

To use Create Primitive Live, primitive interactive creation must be enabled.

You can enable it from the menu bar inside the Create menu or from the creation Marking Menu within the viewport by pressing Shift + RMB while nothing is selected.
